Kolbudy commune, which is situated at the north – eastern ground of Pomerania province, is spreading picturesquely on the part of Pojezierze Kaszubskie (Kashubian Lake District), called Szwajcaria Kaszubska (Kashubian Switzerland). In 15 village councils, which are part of the commune, live about 20000 people.
The landscape of Kolbudy is dominated by many undulating hills and crystal – clear lakes: the Otomin Lake, the Łapino and the Goszyn Lake.
The Radunia and the Reknica rivers flow swiftly through deep, glacial, river valleys.
It is through the latter that the nature reserve “The Reknica Gorge” was created.
This area, covered in dense forest, gives you the impression of a lost, fairy land. You can see the aged beeches, oaks and sycamores there, whose trunks very often have got 1 metre in diametre. The forests are undoubtedly the most valuable resources of Kolbudy. The area is a mushroom pickers’ paradise and a shelter for many species of plants and animals. Moreover, the black stork, crane and heron nest along the edges of the forests. If you are a good observer, you may spot even a hawk. Moreover, deer, wild boars, foxes and elk can be found there. Kolbudy, with the area of breathtaking beauty and unspoilt countryside equals the primeval forests. You can find not only many reserves, areas of protected landscape, forest lands and aged trees there, but also the hatchery of wild birds. What is more, there are many mysteries and peculiarities in the forests. The Amber Mountain, where the reserve was created to protect the remains of the amber mine or the graveyard from the time of Roman influence are only some of them. Not only has Kolbudy got magnificent scenery, but also a number of worth mentioning monuments. One may find here numerous testimonies of the activity and culture of Slavic people. These are: the ruins of cemeteries from the early Bronze Age, the early medieval forts and the upland fort – the fortified settlement of Pomeranian Slavs from IX – X century. On one of Pręgowo hills stands a stone church, probably built by the Teutonic Order, approximately 600 years ago. The church in Lublewo is similar in age to the one in Pręgowo. However, the first one was on fire twice within the space of chequered history. It was rebuilt in stone by Gdańsk townsmen.
Undoubtedly, a matter of pride for the commune is the eighteenth – century church in Czapielsk. At its main altar stands the painting of St. Nicholas. At the foot of it there are three fine figures of girls. The legend has it that that St. Nicholas found husbands for those girls. The commune has got a few peculiarities in forms of dams on the Radunia river. In formal speech these are called hydrotechnical buildings. They include 100 – years old hydroelectric power stations. Despite the advanced age, they are still working. It is worth mentioning that the Radunia cascade, which consists of 8 interacting with one another hydroelectric power stations, is a rarity on a European scale. In the area of Kolbudy commune there are many resorts and hotels. Agrotourism is becoming more and more popular there.
Well – developed sports – recreational infrastructure (tennis courts, marina or stud farms), as well as trade network, convenient drive and the nearness of Tri – City make the commune a desirable place for tourists. Along the edges of Kolbudy, in the immediate vicinity of Gdańsk there are excellent investment grounds. More than 1000 economic entities are registered in the commune, none of whom is of a problematic nature.
The vast majority of Kolbudy area is in the protective drinking water zone. This is a clear illustration of the fact that Kolbudy commune has got a nontoxic character of business activity. The commune has enjoyed a fine reputation for being a prosperous one. As regards to the income on one inhabitant has been in high provincial ranks for ages.
